Journey on the Sea

Task description: This week we have been learning all about how to be safe in, on and around the water. We read an article called Journey on the Sea and it was about sailing. Manaiakalani Film Festival Blog Commenting

Task description: This week was the annual Maniakalani Film Festival! We were lucky enough to see our classes movie on the big screen at Hoyts. This week for our writing task we were able to watch some of the Manaiakalani Film Festival movies and create positive, thoughtful and helpful comments on the class blog of the movies. Recount: Marshmallow Challenge

Task description: This week we have been learning how to create a recount by adding lots of detail to what we are writing. We had to complete a fun activity called the marshmallow challenge. Once we finished our challenge we had to write a recount about our experience. Check out my recount below. Please leave a positive comment on my blog.

Today we got into groups and completed a marshmallow challenge. We had 10 marshmallows and 20 pasta sticks. We had to make the tallest tower to win the challenge. We got into a group of 5 people: Catherine, Alpina, Emzjull, Sophia and myself. There was only fifteen minutes to make the tower.

The first thing I did with my group was to get an idea of what we were going to do with the pasta sticks. For our first idea we broke our pasta sticks and put one marshmallow on each stick and then stacked them on top of each other. But that did not work out as we wanted it to. Then we came up with another idea, we started with the base then we started to stack the marshmallows on top of each other.

The next thing that happened was we tried to put both of these ideas together to build the tallest tower. We did manage to get our tower to stand up and it was looking pretty solid for a while. While we were adding more bits and waiting for the timer to countdown our tower started to look like it might not hold up.

When the timer went off and we went to look at other peoples towers ours fell over and we had to hold it up with our hands. I think we had really good ideas and lots of them but we didn’t plan it before we started. We just went in and broke up all the sticks and marshmallows.

I had fun working with my group for this challenge. We all had lots of really good ideas. Next time I think we should plan our idea out a bit better.

Manaiakalani Film Festival Presentation

Task description: This week we have been coming up with some creative ideas for our Manaiakalani film festival movie. My group thought decided that we should create a movie about the missing teacher. We had to present our ideas with the rest of the class to see what they thought of the idea. Here is a video of us sharing our idea with the rest of the class, what do you think?

Manaiakalani Film Festival Idea

Task description: This term we will be filming our Manaiakalani film festival movies and our teacher has asked us to share our ideas with her. This is the plan that my group came up with about a missing teacher. We also had to present our ideas to the rest of the class which I will share in a separate blog post. Please let me know what you think of my idea!

Characters

Who are the main characters in the movie?

Describe each character in detail. 

Policewoman: Played by Sophia, she is a mean woman who is overprotective of her job. She is bossy but is really good at her job. 
Murderer: Played by Emzjull. She is the murderer but is disguised as a sheriff that is working with the policewoman. She is sneaky and always one step ahead of the police. 
Main Suspect: Played by Alepina, there will also be a range of minor suspects played by students from room 10. The main suspect is being framed by her sister who is the sheriff. She isn’t as smart as the sheriff. 
Victim: Played by Maddison, she was poisoned by the sheriff who was her good friend because the victim was more famous than the murderer. 
Setting
Where is the plan set? Is there more than one location?
Hall – where they are having a disco and where the poisoning happens. 
Police station – where the main events happen, there is one long desk and seats on each side where the suspects are being questioned. 
Plot:

What is the problem?

Maddison has been poisoned by a mystery person (Emzjull) and the policewoman needs to work out who the killer was.

Maddison is feeling dead

Emzjuill is jealous of Maddison which is why she killed her. 

Alepina is feeling sad and is dead and nervous because she is the main suspect. 

Sophia is feeling mad because he has to work and bossy because she wants to get it sorted.

What is the action that will be taken to fix 

the problem?

Sophia is looking for clues and is interviewing suspects to see what they were up to during the time of the murder. She is also looking for a motive.

What is the resolution?

The police are getting close to finding the murderer. Alepina finds out it is her sister so she comes behind and shoots Emzjull and then goes on the run..to be continued.

Sunday Hero

Task description: this week we read a story called Sunday Hero. It was about Oma and her relationship with her granddaughter and sharing memories from the past. For this task we had to answer questions and then create a GIF showing a part of the book that made us infer the meaning of the emotion or action. The line I chose was “Oma looked doubtful” and I created a GIF on photopea showing this which is in the presentation.

This week we are going to conduct a science experiment using the scientific method to write up the results.  Use the class brainstorm from the jam board if you need extra help.

I think that the salt and sugar will dissolve in water. I think that pepper, oil, oats and sprinkles will not dissolve in water.

You will need:

  • Six cups
  • A pen or pencil
  • Sprinkles
  • Oats
  • Sugar
  • Pepper
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Measuring cups
  • Paper
Procedure
What steps will you take to do the experiment?
1.  Put six cups onto the table.

2. Label the six cups with pen/pencils, with what you will be adding to each cup.  

3. Add a spoon full of each ingredient into your one of your six labelled cups. (Repeat this for all six of the cups). 

4. Add half a cup of water into one of your cups.  Repeat this for all six of the cups. 

5. You then would have to use your spoon to mix the water and other material in the cup. 

6. Watch and see your results

Conclusion What did you find out? Was your prediction correct?
Yes our prediction was correct, we thought that the salt and sugar would dissolve in the water. We thought that the oil, oats, pepper and sprinkles would not dissolve in the water. What we found interesting was the sprinkles, the colour of the sprinkles dissolved but the sprinkles themselves did not. The water changed a dark colour with all of the colours merging together and we were left with white sprinkles at the bottom of the cup.

Year 5 and 6 Camp

Task description: A few weeks ago we had year 5 and 6 camp on our school field. This week for writing we had to create a recount about our camp experience. Check out my camp experience below:

This year we went on a year 5 and 6 camp at school for two night and there day.On the first day we did slip and slide first but before we did we did a game to warm up so the water would not be so cold.The first game we play was line tag its were we had some thats was in and we had to run away from them.Then we went on the slip and slide and i had so much fun there with the camp leaders.

Next we had killer zone its were we had to complete a lot of task to win my favourite one was ski run.We had to put on these things thats looked like skis and work as a team to get to the other side of the river.Then we had to go under a small little trap like a mountain we all had to crawl under the tarp.We had to run over to the gun boot throw and we had to land on the black tarp to get a point we had to go up to ten points to win the game.

Year 5 and 6 camp was really fun and we got to learn lots of new things. I can’t wait until I am a year 6 and get to go to camp all over again.
